Many people have helix piercings, although they may not realize it. Many people refer to their helix piercing as “my cartilage piercing” and the area in question is the upper portion of the ear. It is very common to see someone with their earlobes pierced, and one or two other piercings located high on the ear. This is not a “cartilage piercing” as so many people proudly proclaim. It’s a Helix Piercing.

Calling a Helix Piercing a cartilage piercing is a misnomer, because your entire ear (sans earlobes) is made of cartilage. Any piercing not on your earlobe (which is most peoples first ear piercing) is a cartilage piercing. The stereotypical second and third holes ascending from the earlobe are cartilage piercings; in this article, we shall call this particular high on the ear piercing by its proper name – the Helix.

After the earlobes, the Helix is the most popular piercing in America. For many people, the Helix is their first venture into the wonderful world of body piercing. Unfortunately for many people, it was probably pierced in a mall via a piercing gun. If you are considering getting your Helix pierced, don’t get it pierced in a mall – go to a professional piercing parlor and get pierced with a sterile, safe, piercing needle instead of an unhygienic and damaging piercing gun. Having said that, once you have committed to a Helix piercing, your piercer will have no trouble piercing it for you – the Helix is incredibly easy to pierce.

Your piercer will probably recommend getting pierced with a hoop or captive bead ring, on this particular piercing, and I highly suggest complying with this recommendation. Of course, you may really want a barbell, and your piercer may think that’s a viable option for you, so do what you feel comfortable with. The only real advantage a hoop or ring has is that it accommodates swelling better and holes pierced with rings and hoops tend to heal faster, but to each their own!

You will sit in the piercing chair, which almost always looks like a dentist chair, and your piercer will make mark on your ear. You get to look at the mark and approve or disapprove of the location, once the location has been agreed upon, your piercer will push the needle through your ear on your exhale. The jewelry is practically instantly inserted, and once the ball has been secured, your fabulous new piercing is done! The Helix piercings will not affect your hearing, speech, nervous system, balance, etc. These are all rumors – ignore them. It’s a very safe piercing, and the pain should only last for a split second.

You can also get a Helix Orbital, which is two piercings on the Helix conjoined by one piece of jewelry. This piercing is slightly more complicated because the piercer has to measure the space between the piercings correctly, but it should not be a problem for a professional.

Cartilage does take longer to heal than the earlobe – and this piercing will take up to a year to completely heal. It may look fine and feel fine after six months, but that doesn’t mean it’s fully healed; twelve months seems to be the magic number for Helix Piercings. Cell phone use, sleeping on it, gel from your hair, dirty fingers touching the piercing, and ignoring proper aftercare procedures will probably result in an infection. This can be avoided by not touching the piercing, soaking it in warm saline solution, not banging objects against it (cell phones really are the biggest offenders), and having a gentle touch will go a long way in preventing infection. Even with constant care, swelling, redness, and bleeding are still common occurrences for the first couple weeks, but these should all subside by two months or so.

As many people do, you can get multiple piercings in your Helix. This is a wonderful way to express your individuality and creativity, but just allow time for your body to heal before changing the jewelry. Good luck with your Helix piercing, and remember with Helix piercings, your imagination is the only limit!

Meagan Estabrook asked:

In the last decade, body piercing has become more and more popular. Some would say it’s an art, much like tattooing, and your body is the canvas. But for many it’s therapeutic as well as a fashion statement. In certain cases, people can have twenty to thirty, or more piercings. America, a hundred years ago, this wouldn’t be acceptable, but today it’s considered a way of expressing your uniqueness and individuality. If there’s a body part you want pierced, you can find someplace to do it, regardless of how crazy it is. In fact the more unusual the location of the piercing the more you get noticed.

One of the most popular body parts for piercing would be the ear. Whether your 2 years old, or 50 years old, pierced ears is one of the more acceptable location for a piercing. But many in the younger generations, have taken ear piercing to a new level by “gauging”. And for those who don’t know this is basically making the hole bigger, so you can wear thicker gauges body jewelry. All piercing rings have a gauge, obviously. Gauge is merely a size, and the standard for ear gauges is 16-18. And from there, the lower the number the bigger the size.

An ear gauge of 10 is the biggest you will be able to pierce it, and not everywhere will do it that large initially. The best way of going to a larger size is consulting a professional about tapering. This is a gradual and less harmful way of stretching your ear gauges. By then you will be able to wear sizes of ear gauges anywhere from 10 – 0000. But usually in the mall the largest you will be able to find is 00 which translates to approximately 3/8 of an inch. So if you plan on going to the bigger sizes, be prepared to have to visit a piercing shop, and possibly look around online for the right size.

But don’t get me wrong, ears gauges aren’t the only place you can make bigger. In fact, there are many places for gauges body jewelry. Whether it’s labrets or eyebrows people will gauges body jewelry on their body. Although, if you plan on gauging the more unusual body piercings it’s recommended not to go any bigger than 10, for cosmetic reasons. But then again, many thought ear gauges were weird but now its widely accepted. (Usually amongst those who are considered “gothic” or “punk”.) Remember, if this is something your considering be sure to take the proper precautions as well as consulting a professional who is experienced in gauges body jewelry.

Caffeinated Content

Body piercing is one of the oldest and most interesting forms of adornment and/or body modification, yet the reasons for piercing the body are as diverse as the cultures they come from. It is basically the insertion of jewelry into an opening made in the ear, nose, eyebrow, lip, tongue or other area of the body. It is at least 3,400 years old and is returning to the mainstream of modern Western cultures as attitudes and values change.

Body piercing is a form of body modification and is performed without anesthesia and is a rather quick procedure. It is when a hole is made in your skin so you can add a piece of jewelry for decoration. It is an invasive procedure, where a foreign object is placed into an open wound; Even though both the wound and the jewelry may be small, the natural physical reaction is for your body to refuse or reject the intrusion.

Body piercing is often done in the same establishments as tattoo studios. It can be traced back to ancient times and can be found in many different cultures and is common among some Africans and Native Americans. Body piercing is complex, and any piercer who is a professional will gladly explain where he learned and from whom. Body piercing can be risky if the proper precautions are not taken but can be a safe and beautiful body art if a few precautions are taken. It can be performed on any part of the body but certain sites are more likely to be associated with severe complications.

The most common body parts to have a piercing is the ear, nose and naval. Naval piercing is also referred to as belly piercing and youngsters find it very seductive. It is often done for decorative purposes and draws attention to one’s stomach. Nose piercing is very attractive, and can draw attention to the face, because the nose is the face’s most prominent limb. Nose piercing is also common in India, where the left nostril is pierced to prevent medical issues and ease childbirth. Ear piercing is by far the most popular type of body piercing and is believed to have been practiced longer than any other form of body piercing and is an almost universal practice for men and women, it’s only in western society that it’s deemed effeminate.

Body piercing isn’t the only trent to sweep across many corners of the world. People make other changes to themselves, some are permanent, and others temporary. Tattoos are a growing trend, which although have been around for many years, has recently become extremely popular with both males and females and has become far more accepted within todays society. This is partly due to newer tools and technology, and better inks of which both can achieve crisper, sharper designs.

Many women also have hair extensions fitted to change the way they look. The hair is one of the most prominent features of the body which can be coloured, cut and styled making this the most featured area of the body with regards to the fashion industry. A popular product range within the hair extension industry of recent times are clip in hair extensions. These are proving extremely popular as they can be put in and taken out within a matter of minutes and are virtually undetectable if the right ones are purchased. These are available in both synthetic hair and real human hair, with the latter being the most expensive, but generally the better option. These can change the way a person looks, as and when they want that particular look. Another form of hair extensions are glue in hair extensions. These are a more permanent option, and generally cost more money.

One type of piercing that is getting more and more popular today is the tongue piercing. This is a contemporary styles of piercing and today you’ll see many rockers and college students going with this type of piercing. Of course you should take the time to give it some consideration before you decide that a tongue piercing is right for you, but once you do decide you’re going to go for it, there are several things you are going to want to know about this type of piercing before you get it done. So, here are a few important things that you need to know before you get your tongue piercing done.

Placement of Tongue Piercings

First of all, it is important that you are aware of the placement of tongue piercings. Most of the time you will find that tongues are actually pierced right in the center of the tongue. Usually a barbell is put into the hold, since it is the most popular type of tongue jewelry today. When you are considering the placement of your tongue piercing, you need to consider where it is going to be in relation to your teeth. You don’t want the piercing to constantly be hitting your teeth, since it can actually hip the enamel on your teeth. Also, if you get the jewelry too far forward on the tongue and you’ll find that the way you talk will be affected as well. So, make sure that the tongue ring you get is carefully placed so you won’t have to deal with any of these problems.

Taking Care of Your Piercing

Once you have your tongue piercing done, you are going to have to make sure that you take care of your piercing. It is important that you keep your mouth healthy and clean and for about 4-6 weeks, you’re going to have to take special care with the piercing. Cleaning the piercing each day is going to be especially important and if you want to know the best products to use to keep in clean, your piercer can give you a few good recommendations to choose from.

Eating with a Tongue Piercing

When you have a tongue piercing done, you should be ready to have it mess up your eating for a few weeks, especially for that first week. You’ll no doubt be dealing with quite a bit of swelling, and at first it is going to really hurt to eat. One of the best things that you can do to get rid of the swelling and ease the pain is to suck on ice or even eat some popsicles as well.
